IPATA BOAS Assessment
What Is a BOAS Assessment?

BOAS stands for "Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome" — a condition affecting short-nosed pets that can make breathing more difficult, especially during heat or stress, such as air travel.
An IPATA BOAS assessment determines whether your pet is healthy enough to fly and helps airlines ensure your pet’s comfort and safety throughout the journey.
Common breeds that require assessment include:
- Pugs
- Bulldogs (English, French, and Boston)
- Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Pekingese
- Boxers
- Persian and Himalayan cats

What to Expect During the Assessment

Our BOAS evaluation is gentle, professional, and designed to make your pet’s experience as calm as possible. Here’s what it includes:

1. Medical history review — We discuss your pet’s health, exercise tolerance, and any previous breathing concerns.
2. Physical exam — We assess nostrils, throat, and breathing patterns.
3. Functional test — A brief observation & exercise test to evaluate airway performance.
4. Grading — Your pet is assigned a BOAS grade from 0 (normal) to 3 (severe). Only pets considered safe to fly are approved.
5. Certification — You’ll receive the official BOAS report and documentation required for travel.
Preparing for Your Appointment

A few easy steps can help your appointment go smoothly:
- Book your BOAS assessment 2–4 weeks before travel.
- Keep your pet cool and calm before the visit.
- Bring any relevant medical history or videos of your pet breathing.
- Ensure your pet maintains a healthy weight — overweight pets are at higher risk.
Understanding the BOAS Grades

- Grade 0 (Normal): No airway issues — cleared for flight.
- Grade 1 (Mild): Minor breathing noise but no distress — travel approved with standard precautions.
- Grade 2 (Moderate): Some restriction — may travel with specific airline guidance.
- Grade 3 (Severe): Air travel not recommended — we’ll discuss safer alternatives.

Travel Tips for Flat-Faced Breeds

Even after a successful BOAS assessment, these steps can make flying safer:
- Choose direct flights (where possible) to reduce stress.
- Avoid flights in extreme heat or humidity.
- Use a well-ventilated travel crate approved by your airline.
- Never sedate your pet before flying.
- Clearly label your crate with contact details and vet clearance paperwork.
